DR. WHAW? – August 12, 2009

Alright, y’all!  We’re more than halfway through the week.  I hate to keep doing this, but it’s been a hectic time for me.  I’m packing up and gettin’ ready to move out, all the while trying to find a plan for after my internship and figure out when I can visit a very special man in Australia.  Phew!  With all that on my plate, there was a ton of great stuff I Didn’t Read While Hard At Work today!

DR. WHAW? – August 12, 2009

1. What Wont You Compromise? by Amber Naslund — An introspective post, this one really made me think about those things which I refuse to compromise.  It also inspired a great post from Olivier Blanchard on the same subject.  Seriously give this a read and think about what you are not willing to compromise. Ever.

2. Twuner: Listen to Tweets on Your iPhone by Jennifer Van Grove — I chose this post because I thought this new application looks, well, weird.  Twuner will literally read Tweets to you.  I suppose this could be handy?  You could work, but still stay on top of all your Tweets.  Do you see yourself using this?  There was also a lot of talk today about Facebook Lite which is the newest application from Facebook.  Many are afriad it will be a rival to Twitter, but Facebook claims it will only be used for those with slow connections.  Do you see yourself getting use from this?  Why?

3. Finding the right social media strategist by Arik Hanson — If you’re looking to hire a social media strategist, you should definitely look at this post and the comments.  Arik Hanson gives his opinion on what to consider about a candidate and invites other to include their opinions.  There are already some great responses that add to the criteria presented in the post.  I think there are some great areas, but I think the best suggestion is this: consider the goals you need to accomplish first and foremost.  What criteria are necessary or important to your goals?

4. The 1.2 Million Definitions of PR: What’s your take? by Lauren Fernandez — She’s done it again!  When you go out to a happy hour, how do you explain to others what it is that you do?  How do you explain what a PR practitioner does?  As always, Lauren Fernandez has inspired some fantastic comments.  Read and consider!  And contribute, too, what’s your definition?

5. Friending and Reputation by Chris Brogan — What is the difference between relationship-building and endorsement?  When you add someone as a connection or friend on a social network, does that mean the same to you as endorsing them?  Or not?  See what one of the social media greats, Chris Brogan, has to say.  His arguments are well thought out, and I guarantee it will help you navigate social networks.

6. Twitter users are old but (print) newspaper readers are young by Frank Strong — Guess what?  Twitter users are on average are over the age of 35, and half of all 18-24 year olds read a print newspaper daily.  Are you surprised?  I know I was!  This completely contradicts the stereotypes we are meant to believe about media use.  Why do you think this is?  I almost wonder if those who claim to read a newspaper daily really do.  Do they do it because they think they should to impress their elder?  Do you they say they do it because they think need to?

7. Why PR Pros Should Be The Ones To Handle Social Media by David Teicher — As more corporations accept that social media is here to stay, they must consider how best to handle it.  David Teicher makes the argument that public relations professionals should be the ones to take on this new medium.  What do you think?  It seems intuitive to me.  Social media is all about relationships, and who better to handle it than professional trained to maintain relationships?!

I feel as though lately I’ve been choosing the most Retweeted articles, but is that really fair?  Would you rather see more obscure readings?  Please leave comments or questions, and remember to send votes for the Sunday digest to my e-mail or Twitter.

Thank you for all your great posts! I find it hard not to pick one of yours everyday (it’s like that with a bunch of people, too!) but I try to be fair…
